The Campfire

As I learn to become a better eScouter, I’m finding ways to tie the different Social Media sites together. This is one of my attempts. Last October I was one of several Scouters that wondered if it would be possible to host an online virtual campfire on Facebook. The very first one was run on October 31st and “The Campfire” was born.

This is how it works. A member decides that they would like to host a fire. They choose the date and time (usual format would be the day, time, and the timezone – ie EST) how long the fire will last (standard is 24 hrs but we have done whole weekends before) and if there is a theme (I ran a Remembrance fire Nov 11th). This information is then posted to the group via either the feed or as an event.

When the time arrives, the Campfire Chief (host) posts a campfire opening and a song  or two (Youtube is a great resource) to start the fire off. From that point all members are welcome to comment, post songs of their own, stories, skits, etc. Of course you are welcome to just sit and watch if you like. I enjoy watching the feed come to life with Scouters and Scouts (many young people are members as well) enjoying what is posted and remembering past experiences. The speed of the comments and posts is amazing and even though everybody is just on the other side of your computer monitor, you feel the fellowship of a great campfire!

Of course there are times when there isn’t a fire burning too. During these times we share ideas, ask questions, and post photos. We have even started a few living documents for openings, closing, and Campfire magic. A campfire is one of my most favourite parts of Scouting and I love to share it with others. I feel that Scouters are often the Scouters best resource, and with over 230 members, there is a wealth of experience and fellowship at this “Campfire”!

I’m going to leave you with an opening that was created special for “The Campfire”. If you would like to join The Campfire click here. We look forward to seeing you there!

The campfire awaits, come on in. A spark in the night it begins! If you’re a dreamer, a wisher, a tale teller. A hoper, a pray-er, a magic jellybean seller. A pretender, a wizard, a knight, or a squire. A singer, a watcher, come sit by our fire. Come share in the songs and stories we spin. To join here in friendship, come in, come in!

Until next time – Be safe, be prepared, and keep Scouting!
